What Is Baptism All About? A Step of Faith at Calvary Life Brooklyn
Baptism is a meaningful and significant step in the journey of following Jesus Christ. At Calvary Life Church in Brooklyn, we believe baptism is more than just a tradition—it’s a public declaration of your faith and a powerful symbol of the transformation happening inside your heart.
Why Is Baptism Important?
Jesus Commanded It
Jesus Himself instructed His followers to be baptized, saying in Matthew 28:19, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Baptism is a step of obedience to His clear command.
A Public Confession of Faith
In Matthew 10:32, Jesus emphasized the importance of openly acknowledging Him before others. Baptism provides a tangible way to declare to family, friends, and the church community that you have chosen to follow Jesus.
An Outward Sign of Inner Change
Baptism symbolizes what God has done inside you. Romans 6:3-4 explains that being immersed in water represents dying to your old life and being raised anew with Christ—just like Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. It’s a visible picture of your spiritual rebirth and commitment.
Do We Believe Baptism Saves You?
No, baptism itself does not save. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is a step of obedience following salvation, an outward expression of the inward change God has worked in your life.
What Type of Baptism Do We Practice?
We believe in full immersion baptism, meaning you will be gently lowered fully underwater to symbolize dying to your old life and rising with Christ. For those who feel uncomfortable with full immersion, we also provide the option of pouring water over your head while still honoring the meaning.
Who Should Be Baptized?
Anyone who has personally accepted Jesus as their Savior and is committed to following Him is encouraged to be baptized. We do not baptize infants, as the Bible speaks of believers’ baptism—those old enough to understand and believe (Acts 2:38, Romans 6).
What About Infant Baptism?
While we respect parents who desire to dedicate their children, baptism is reserved for those who can make a conscious decision of faith. Infants and young children may be dedicated to the Lord, but baptism will happen when they understand and choose to follow Christ.
Baptism for Children and Teens
Children who are old enough to grasp the meaning of faith and have accepted Jesus can be baptized, typically after age 12 or upon readiness. Baptism is never forced; it is always a willing act of the heart.
What Happens During a Baptism Service at Calvary Life?
After our Sunday service, baptism candidates gather for fellowship and worship. When called, you will share your faith story—how you met Jesus and what He means to you. Then, a pastoral representative will baptize you by immersion in water, celebrating your new life in Christ together with the church family.
What Should You Wear?
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked—swimsuits combined with a modest top like a t-shirt or sweatshirt are recommended. Bring a towel and change of clothes for afterward. Most importantly, invite your family and friends to witness and celebrate this milestone with you!
Will You Speak During the Service?
You will be asked two simple questions before baptism:
- Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
- Do you renounce sin and commit to following Christ alone?
- What was life like before you followed Jesus?
- How did you come to realize you needed a Savior?
- Why have you chosen to be baptized now?
- How has your life changed since accepting Jesus?
Final Encouragement: You Are Not Alone
We are praying for you every step of the way as you prepare for baptism. Satan may try to discourage you, but remember, baptism is a joyful step of obedience and celebration. Ask your community to pray for you too—they want to support you as much as we do!
