There is no verse twelve.
Jonah 4 ends with God asking a question, and the prophet never answers it. The book simply stops. Which means the answer was never Jonah's to give — it belongs to whoever is reading.
By every measure we use, chapter three is the most successful preaching event in the Old Testament. A city of more than a hundred and twenty thousand turns to God. And chapter four opens with the preacher furious about it.
He is angry that God was merciful. He quotes God's own character back at Him — gracious, merciful, slow to anger, abundant in lovingkindness — and he says it as an accusation. Then he walks out of the city, builds himself a shelter, and sits down to watch what will happen to it. The man who came to preach stayed to spectate.
What follows is not a rebuke. It is an argument. God prepares a plant to comfort him, a worm to correct him, and a scorching east wind to press him — and then asks him one question about a shrub he did not plant, did not water, and did not grow. You had pity on that. Should I not pity a city?
