Nahum 2–3: The Strongholds We Imagine

Nov 1, 2026  •  Richie Cancel

What are you counting on to keep you safe?

Nineveh had walls about seven and a half miles around, fifteen gates, a river running through the middle, and the most feared army in the world. It had everything a city could put its trust in. Then God said,

“Behold, I am against you” (Nahum 2:13, NKJV), and every stronghold fell like ripe fruit off a shaken tree.

In this message we walk verse by verse through Nahum 2 and 3:

- the siege of Nineveh, written before it happened

- the city’s cruelty, recorded in its own kings’ boasts

- the warning of Thebes, which Nineveh ignored

- a city that was gone on the inside before its walls came down

Along the way we look at what history and archaeology add: the Babylonian Chronicle, the lion carvings from the palace walls, and the gate where Nineveh’s last defenders fell.

Nahum isn’t only about an ancient empire. It asks each of us what we’re fortifying. Is it a bank account, a position, a plan that makes us feel we don’t need God? Only one stronghold stands:

“The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” — Nahum 1:7 (NKJV)

“All your strongholds are fig trees with ripened figs: if they are shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater.” — Nahum 3:12 (NKJV)

📖 Scripture: Nahum 2–3 (NKJV)
