Micah 5-6 - He Comes Forth from Bethlehem

Sep 27, 2026  •  Richie Cancel

Micah names a village. Bethlehem Ephrathah — little among the thousands of

Judah — and out of it comes a Ruler "whose goings forth are from of old,

From everlasting" (Micah 5:2). Seven hundred years later, Herod's scholars

found that verse in one reading. It was never hidden. It was ignored.

Chapter five tells you what this Ruler does. He stands and feeds His flock

in the strength of the Lord, and they abide — literally, they sit down. He

does not bring peace; He is peace, while the Assyrian is still in the land.

And then He goes to work on His own people, cutting off the horses, the

chariots, the strongholds, the sorceries, the carved images — every

substitute they had for trusting Him.

Chapter six opens a courtroom, and the jury is the mountains. God does not

begin with a list of their crimes. He begins with a question: "O My people,

what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me"

(Micah 6:3). Israel answers by bidding — calves, thousands of rams, ten

thousand rivers of oil, a firstborn son — offering everything except

themselves. And then the verse that has outlived every other line in the

book: "He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require

of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?"

(Micah 6:8)
