GROWING UNDONE: A Study in Romans

Sermon 11: "The Sovereignty of God – Israel's Rejection and God's Sovereign Choice"

Romans 9:1-33

"What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not!" — Romans 9:14

WHAT WE SEE VS. WHAT HE SAYS

Romans 1-8 established a glorious truth: ALL MEN—Jew and Gentile—are under wrath, and ALL MEN can be made righteous by faith in Jesus Christ.

But that raises a question: Does it matter to be a Jew then?

If the Jew is saved the same way as the Gentile, has God abandoned His chosen people? Has the Church replaced Israel?

This has been the stumbling block for many through the ages.

What we SEE:

A people exiled, dispersed, rejected their Messiah

A new people—the Gentiles—become the family of God

What we might conclude:

The Church replaced Israel.

But God says something different.

IN THIS MESSAGE:

💔 Paul's Personal Anguish: "Great sorrow and continual grief in my heart" for his countrymen

👑 The Privileges of Israel: Adoption, glory, covenants, law, service, promises, fathers, and Christ Himself

⚖️ God's Sovereign Choice: "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy"

KEY TRUTH:

"No one has a RIGHT to God's favor, mercy, or grace. All can ask, but not all are owed."

Whether you understand it or not, whether you surrender to it or not—God is RIGHTEOUS in His mercy!

THE THREE PERSPECTIVES OF ROMANS 9:

Paul's Perspective - Personal anguish for his people

God's Perspective - Sovereignty, justice, and prophecy

Man's Perspective - The stumbling stone of works-righteousness

BOTTOM LINE:

Has God's Word failed? Absolutely not.

God has not broken His Word.

God has not acted out of character.

God has not changed His mind.

"Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." — Romans 9:33
