GROWING UNDONE: A Study in Romans

Sermon 8: "Sanctification: The Experience of Faith – Freed from the Law & The Battle Within"

Romans 7:1-25

"O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!" — Romans 7:24-25

FROM EVIDENCE TO EXPERIENCE

In Romans 6, Paul showed us the evidence of faith: we died to sin and are alive to God.

Now in Romans 7, he takes us into the experience of faith—the raw, honest, often messy reality of living in a fallen body while belonging to Christ.

Two Revelations in One Chapter:

1. FREED FROM THE LAW (v.1-13)

The law cannot save us. The law cannot sanctify us. But the law is not the enemy—sin is. The law is like a mirror: it shows you your dirty face, but it cannot wash it. It drives us to Christ.

2. THE BATTLE WITHIN (v.14-25)

Even as believers, we experience an ongoing war between the flesh and the Spirit. Paul describes the carnal Christian—the one trying to live by the law in his own strength—and his cry of desperation becomes our own.

IN THIS MESSAGE:

💍 Married to Another: Dead to the law, united to Christ

🍇 Bearing Fruit: The purpose of our new union

⚖️ The Mirror of the Law: Revealing sin, not removing it

😫 "O Wretched Man That I Am!" The cry of coming to the end of yourself

✝️ The Deliverer: Not "try harder"—Jesus Christ our Lord

THE WAR WITHIN:

"I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind."

Over 30 times Paul says "I" in this passage. Self-focus is the mark of the carnal man. The answer is not more self-effort—it's looking away to Christ.

The struggle is real. But the Deliverer is greater.

THE QUESTION:

Are you trying to live the Christian life by the law—striving, failing, striving again?

Or are you depending on the Spirit—walking in newness, serving in freedom, crying out to your Deliverer?

"Faith makes all things possible. Grace makes all things easy."
